Dimmer Switch and Outlet Combination

A dimmer, switch, and outlet combination puts lighting control and a live receptacle in the same wall box. Our combination plates are solid brass, built for standard U.S. single-gang and multi-gang boxes, and available in toggle, dimmer, and outlet configurations. Choose your layout and build your exact setup.

What a Dimmer, Switch, Outlet Combination Actually Does

Most walls have either a switch or an outlet, not both. A combination dimmer switch and outlet solves that in a single gang box: one location handles lighting control and a live receptacle at the same time. That is useful in kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, and anywhere wall space is limited.

The three most common layouts in this range:

  • Rotary dimmer + duplex outlet
  • Toggle switch + duplex outlet
  • Rotary dimmer + toggle switch

Each plate ships as a solid brass cover with openings sized for the specific devices you are installing. Devices are selected separately to match your wiring type and circuit requirements.

Combination Layout Types: Choose What Your Wall Box Needs

Not every combination plate works the same way. The layout you need depends on what devices you are combining and how your circuit is wired.

  • Toggle + outlet: A standard on/off switch paired with a duplex receptacle. The outlet can be wired to stay live at all times or controlled by the switch
  • Rotary dimmer + outlet: Lighting control with adjustable brightness alongside a live receptacle. Requires a neutral wire in the box for the outlet to function. Browse brass outlet plates to coordinate across your project
  • Combination switch with dimmer: Two lighting controls in one plate, useful where two separate fixtures or circuits share a wall location
  • Multi-device layouts: 3 and 4 gang combination plates for locations with multiple devices side by side

If your project includes standalone dimmer or toggle locations alongside combination plates, brass dimmer switch and brass toggle light switch are available in the same finishes.

Wiring Compatibility: What to Confirm Before You Order

A combination switch with a dimmer or outlet involves more terminals than a standard switch. A few things to confirm before ordering:

  • Neutral wire: The outlet portion requires a neutral wire in the box. This is the white wire. Without it the outlet will not function. Check before ordering, especially in older homes where neutral wires are sometimes absent from switch boxes
  • Box depth: Combination devices have more terminals. A deeper single-gang box is recommended for easier wire management
  • Single-pole vs 3-way: Standard combination units are single-pole. If you need to control a light from two locations, confirm the device is specifically rated for 3-way wiring
  • Dimmer and bulb compatibility: Match the dimmer to your bulb type, LED, incandescent, or halogen, and confirm the wattage rating covers your fixture load
  • Amperage: Match the device amperage to your circuit breaker and wire gauge. Use a 15-amp combination device for standard 14-gauge lighting circuits

For cover plates that coordinate across every wall location, brass wall plates are available in matching finishes across the full range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a combination dimmer switch and outlet exist in a single gang box?

Yes, but with a practical limitation. A rotary dimmer and outlet can be combined in a single gang plate, though the box needs to be deep enough to handle the additional terminals. A deeper single-gang box is recommended to make wiring manageable. Confirm a neutral wire is present in the box before ordering, as the outlet portion requires one to function.

Can the outlet in a combination switch and outlet be wired to stay live independently of the switch?

Yes. A combination switch receptacle can be wired two ways the switch controls the outlet, turning it on and off, or the outlet stays live at all times while the switch operates a separate light fixture. Which setup you use depends on how your circuit is wired. If you're unsure, confirm with a licensed electrician before installing.

Do combination dimmer and switch plates fit a standard U.S. wall box?

Yes. All combination plates are sized for standard U.S. single-gang and multi-gang electrical boxes. Because combination devices have more wiring terminals than a standard switch, a deeper box is recommended. Match the plate opening to the exact device you're installing: toggle, rotary dimmer, duplex outlet, or GFCI/Decora.

Does a combination switch outlet require a neutral wire?

Yes. The outlet portion of any combination dimmer switch and outlet requires a neutral wire, the white wire to be present in the electrical box. Without it, the outlet will not function. This is one of the most common wiring issues with combination devices. Check your box before ordering, especially in older homes where neutral wires are sometimes absent from switch boxes.

Can I install a dimmer on a circuit that has two switch locations?

A standard dimmer is single-pole and controls a light from one location only. If your light is wired with two switches, a 3-way circuit, you need a dimmer specifically rated for 3-way wiring. Installing a single-pole dimmer on a 3-way circuit will not work correctly. Check whether your circuit is single-pole or 3-way before selecting a combination dimmer switch and outlet for that location.
