Choosing the Right Brass Outlet Plate for Your Wall Box
Brass outlet plates are cover plates only. They sit over your existing outlet device and replace the standard plastic cover. Before ordering, confirm two things: the opening type and the gang count.
What to confirm before ordering:
- Opening type: duplex plates have two oval openings for standard receptacles. GFCI/Decora plates have a single rectangular opening for GFCI outlets, rocker switches, USB outlets, and smart devices
- Gang count: match the number of devices in your wall box, 1 to 5 gang available
- Mixed devices: if your wall location has an outlet alongside a switch or dimmer, a combination plate is the correct fit rather than a standard outlet plate
- Finish: choose one finish and carry it consistently across every outlet, switch, and plate location in the room
For the outlet device itself, brass electrical outlets are available separately in matching finishes.
Why Solid Brass Outlet Plates Hold Up Better Than Plastic
Standard outlet plates ship in thin plastic or lightweight painted steel. A solid brass outlet plate has noticeably more weight, holds its finish longer, and sits flush against the wall with more stability. The difference is visible and tactile, particularly in high-traffic locations like kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms where plates get touched regularly.
Brass also coordinates properly with other brass fittings. A brass outlet plate next to a plastic switch cover reads inconsistent. When everything comes from the same range in the same finish, the wall looks considered rather than assembled from different sources.
Finish options available:
- Aged brushed brass
- Unlacquered aged brushed brass
- Brushed satin brass
- Antique brass
- Bronze, black, stainless steel, and white
Coordinating Brass Outlet and Switch Plates Across a Project
Brass outlet and switch plates work best when the finish carries through every wall location. Sourcing plates from different suppliers is the most common cause of finish mismatches, even when both are listed under the same finish name.
GetSwitches covers every plate type in the same finishes. Outlet plates, switch plates, dimmer plates, and combination plates all coordinate from one order.
